After spending most of the next two days scouring several small villages on the French Riviera, looking for any sign of my parents, and spending the nights in my bed, fucking until we reached heavenly exhaustion, we stopped in at a lovely little café in the small village of Vence. I knew our quest was almost pointless, but I couldn’t give up without at least giving it a good try. Francesco stopped in at any government building, including police stations that we came across, asking about my parents, but no one had any record of them. Not that my parents would be using their true name, but I hoped their description might give us something.

So far, all it had given us was fatigue and frustration.

Jonathan stood watch across the square to make sure no one had followed us. Both he and Francesco had dressed like tourists—baggy shorts, sneakers, and t-shirts with open collars, nothing fancy and nothing that would stand out. I wore jeans, booties, a pink cotton shirt and carried my phone, some cash, an ID, and a few other essentials in a stylish leather belt with pockets.

We hadn’t been followed, but Jonathan’s inner radar wasn’t about to go down. The man couldn’t relax as long as we were visible to the outside world.

I’d worn my wig, but even that didn’t seem to satisfy Jonathan.

Costa was now a permanent part of our team, both during the day and at night in my bed. I didn’t know if it was official or not, but after everything that had happened, he wasn’t going anywhere without us.

He’d bought some clothes, jeans mostly, a bag of toiletries and a couple extra shirts in one of the hotel’s many gift shops. I took it as a sign that he intended to hang around… at least until this thing was over. And I didn’t intend for it to be over until we either found my parents, or we’d scoured the entire area.

And so far, things weren’t looking too good.

“I don’t see how this is ever going to work,” I told Costa as we gathered around a table under an umbrella on the sidewalk, pulling over an extra chair for Francesco who was busy checking out the pastries inside the café.

Until this trip, I never suspected what a sweet tooth he had. Every chance he had, it was time for a double espresso and some sort of sweet cake, mostly something filled with a cream of some sort. The flavor didn’t seem to matter as long as it was filled.

“You worry too much,” Costa said, reaching across the table for my hand.

“I know, but it’s so frustrating. We’re never going to find them. And if we do, what then? Will they acknowledge me? I mean, if they haven’t come forward in all this time, after learning about Charlotte’s fame, there must be a reason why they remain in hiding. Maybe they’re afraid of whoever killed Arnie. I mean that was brutal. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment, and the look on his face.
